DuPont™ Zorvec™ Growth Stage Application Improves Potato Yields

Hands holding successful potato harvest

Your potato yields may depend on what you do during 30 critical days of your crop’s development. Successful potato cultivation depends on using effective fungicides to protect plants during the period from rapid vegetative growth through tuber initiation. This is when you need to use the best product available to protect the potential for high potato yields.

Take aim on potato blight during this critical period with DuPont™ Zorvec™ disease control. Zorvec™ technology brings growers a game-changing potato cultivation solution, offering unmatched consistency and control of disease such as late blight.

Two Key Growth Stages

The critical time for potato development is typically the period from 20 days after emergence to 50 days after emergence (roughly 40 to 70 days after planting). This timeframe has the biggest impact on harvest quality and yield size. Left unchecked, late blight has shown to reduce yields by almost 2,500 kilograms. The two key stages of potato phenology – or development – occur during this time: rapid vegetative growth and tuber initiation. Research trials show Zorvec™ technology is most effective when applied throughout these stages according to label directions, before symptoms of potato blight appear.

Trials showed that DuPont™ Zorvec™ mixtures resulted in potato yields averaging 12% higher than standard crop protection programs.

Effective Application Timing

“The worst thing in the world for potato growers is when they see the first sign of late blight,” says Tatiana Neves, DuPont marketing coordinator for the districts of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. “It’s an ongoing concern: what to apply, when to apply, whether the weather will cooperate, whether you have enough machinery to cover the area.”

Due to Zorvec™ technology’s unique systemic activity, growers can apply Zorvec™ technology once every 7 to 10 days during rapid vegetative growth and tuber initiation. That means the potential of up to 3 days longer control at this important period.

After comparing two applications of Zorvec™ to four applications of another fungicide in a field trial over two weeks, Neves realized she was seeing a major difference.

“I was openmouthed,” Neves recalls. “I’m unaware of any other product in the market that provides this level of prevention and disease control. Besides requiring a lot more applications [in the field treated with standard fungicides], the disease got worse. It did not get out of control, but it slowly got worse. Each application you save means less hours, less machinery, less people, water, diesel, everything.”

By using Zorvec™, growers can reduce the number of applications. Celsio Pelosi, who works in Brazil on new product development for DuPont, agrees. “Consequently, they will enter the field fewer times. They can reduce labor by applying once a week versus three times a week.”

Overcoming Uncertainty to Experience Success

Crops are most vulnerable at their earliest stages. Combine that with untimely weather and the occasional operational downturn, and you could be left with several unwelcome variables.

However, proper application of Zorvec™ technology during the recommended potato growth stages brings stability and optimism to this often uncertain period of the growing season. Pelosi contends, “growers can go home each evening knowing their crops are protected.”

“With all the advantages that Zorvec™ technology can offer, it’s an excellent product for the preventive control of potato blight,” Pelosi adds. “It’s a product that is here to stay, and growers will embrace it.”
