Meeting Global Challenges With Global Collaboration

DuPont is working inclusively with others to find innovative, science-enabled solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges.

Inclusive innovation means global collaboration focused on feeding the world, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and protecting what matters most.

It means hybrid seeds for harsh climates are field-tested by farmers to find the seeds that thrive. It is how solar installations that harvest more energy can be wired into the grid for a growing urban population.  And it makes plant-based replacements for petrochemicals a growing business that enables a shrinking carbon footprint.

DuPont believes that big challenges must be met by bigger science. Inclusive innovation is our approach to applying science to create solutions, on a scale no company, organization or country could accomplish alone.

How Inclusive Innovation Works

    CHALLENGE

    Extending the food chain to people living off the grid.

    For most parents, a trip to the grocery store provides all the food their children need. But for millions of people living without access to basics, like electricity or clean water, nutrition is a bigger challenge. In Mexico, DuPont worked with a local converter to create a package that can deliver milk without requiring refrigeration or access to water.

    SCIENCE

    A new twist on nutrition — just add technology.

    A unique double-sealed package that holds powdered milk on one side and purified water on the other was developed in collaboration with local partners using our family of Surlyn® resins. It puts the nutrition children in remote indigenous communities in Mexico's Chihuahua state need to grow and thrive as close as a twist, shake and sip .

    CHALLENGE

    Helping drivers and fuel go farther.

    Consider that there are more than a billion vehicles on the road, most fueled with gasoline, and it’s easy to see that getting a bit more from every gallon can mean big savings in fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. In China, we’re supplying performance polymers that are lighter than metal, but tough enough for high-heat engine uses.

    Polymers made to take the heat let engines get lighter.

    In China, we're working with Chery Automotive to make lighter-weight taxis that are more fuel efficient and less expensive to operate. DuPontTM Zytel® and other plastics are made to withstand high temperatures and aggressive fuels, providing an alternative to heavier metal in demanding engine applications.

    CHALLENGE

    Wringing water waste out of textile production.

    Roughly 50% of the world’s apparel is made with cotton. But as demand has grown to over 100 million bales a year, established techniques for bleaching and dying have come to consume immense amounts of water and energy. DuPont collaborated with a mill in Portugal to help shrink the resource footprint, while improving textile quality.

    SCIENCE

    A biodegradable enzyme catalyzes lower heat bleaching.

    Together with Portuguese textile company ATB and Huntsman, DuPont developed Gentle Power Bleach™, featuring our PrimaGreen® enzymes. This innovation allows cotton to be bleached at a lower temperature. It’s a formula for saving water and energy – as well as making cotton softer and more durable.
