The Future of Alternative Drive Vehicles

Committed to science in the service of sustainability, DuPont is a leader in materials designed to support alternative drive vehicles: the hybrid and electric cars that are swiftly becoming commonplace on our roads, as well as the next-generation fuel-cell powered vehicles currently in development.

Sustainability — a Commercial and Political Imperative

The development of alternative drive vehicles is driven by both consumer and government demand. Consumers want fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles, but they do not want to pay a premium to drive a more sustainable car. Governments want improved fuel economy and low emissions, and go as far as using manufacturer tax credits and consumer write-offs to incentivize alternative drive vehicle development. However, for a solution to be truly sustainable, it must be economically feasible, as well as environmentally sound. We at DuPont are committed to developing solutions that help lower the costs of alternative drive vehicles.

Working Together to Make Today’s Alternative Tomorrow’s Mainstream

Today’s alternative drive technologies boast high performance and compact design, combined with low operating costs and minimal environmental impact. DuPont scientists are working in close collaboration with the automotive engineering and design community to anticipate and address the evolving material needs of alternative drive vehicles. At DuPont, we’re helping make electric vehicles more mainstream, with solutions like DuPont Energain battery separators. Energain separators can help increase power 15 to 30 percent, increase battery life by up to 20 percent and help improve battery safety by providing stability at high temperatures. Battery packs and power delivery systems require protection from exposure to high voltage as well as electrical isolation, thermal conductivity and lighter-weight materials.  DuPont also has a product portfolio for materials for electrical insulation. Innovative materials like DuPont Nomex® fiber helps enable engine downsizing without compromising performance, making them ideal for alternative drive vehicles.
