DuPont™ Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation

High-Performance Polyiso Foam with Dual Reflective Foil Facers
DuPont™ Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation features high performance, high R-value, closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam core boards sandwiched between a choice of durable exterior foil facers. The polyisocyanurate insulation is created by an exclusive free-rise manufacturing process, which produces a uniform, closed-cell foam for better foam quality than conventional restrained rise process.

Tuff-R™ Insulation helps reduce air infiltration through the wall by covering cracks between the framing members and sealing tightly against the studs. One facer is a continuous sheet of aluminum foil; the other is a durable tri-laminate facer consisting of aluminum foil, kraft and metalized polyester film.

2R-value of 1.0-inch of foam measured @ 75°F mean temperature, determined in accordance with ASTM C518 after aging for 90 days @ 140°F.

3Vertical compressive strength is measured at 10 percent deformation or at yield, whichever occurs first.

FAQ

Is there a tape that can be used with DuPont™ Tuff-R™ (ci) Polyisocyanurate Insulation?
3M_VentureTape produces a foil tape for use with DuPont™ Tuff-R™ (ci) Polyisocyanurate Foam Insulation. This product is typically available through distributors of DuPont™ Tuff-R™ (ci) Polyisocyanurate Foam Insulation or DuPont™ Thermax™ Brand Insulation.

Aluminum Foil Tape 1520 CW NT-

General: Thermax™ Residential Aluminum Tape for use with DuPont™ Thermax™ Sheathing Insulation, DuPont™ Thermax™ Metal Building Board NH Insulation, DuPont™ Tuff-R™ (ci) Polyisocyanurate Insulation products. The Tape has a 1.2 mil (30 micron), aluminum foil coated film with a cold weather (CW) acrylic adhesive system. This pressure-sensitive adhesive combines high quick stick at low, normal and high temperatures with excellent long-term performance at low temperatures and in high humidity environments.

Temperature Range: -40°F to 250°F (-40°C to 121°C)

Minimum Application Temperature: -10°F (-23°C)

What is the water vapor permeability of the facer on DuPont™ Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation?
The trilaminate facer on Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation has a water vapor permeability of < 0.03 perms. The product is tested per ASTM E96 (desiccant method), perms of < 0.03.
Can the aluminum foil facers of DuPont™ Thermax™ Brand Insulation or DuPont™ Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation be painted?
The facers of Thermax™ Insulation and Tuff-R™ Polyisocyanurate Insulation can be painted with an industrial-type latex acrylic paint. The facers must be clean and dry before applying paint. Oil-based paints can also be used. Painting Thermax™/Tuff-R™ foil Facers:

FOIL: Treat surface and prime (optional but recommended). follow paint manufacturer directions for preferred surface preparation, or:

Clean off rolling oils. Clean with mild detergent. Rinse off well and dry before primer, Use industrial type paint and primer for aluminum metal surface such as, Glidden, Sherwin Williams, or equivalent.

What insulation tapes does DuPont recommend for foil-faced DuPont™ Thermax™ Brand Insulation and DuPont™ Tuff-R™ (ci) Polyisocyanurate Insulation products?
Aluminum foil tapes for DuPont foil-faced insulation products have vapor retarder characteristics and provide improved protection against air infiltration when properly applied. DuPont offers the following aluminum foil tapes:

(Note Thermax™ / Tuff-R™ facer surfaces MUST be clean and free of dirt or dust prior to applying tapes - wipe down with damp cloth and dry, then apply tapes)

Thermax™ Aluminum Foil Tape •2.0 mil (50 micron) high-strength aluminum foil with aggressive acrylic adhesive system; suitable for both low and high-temperature applications. Pressure sensitive. •Temperature range: -35°F to 260°F (-37°C to 127°C) •Minimum application temperature: -25°F (-32°C)

Thermax™ White Foil Tape •2.0 mil (50 micron) high-strength white aluminum foil with aggressive acrylic adhesive system; suitable for both low- and high-temperature applications. Pressure sensitive. •Temperature range: -40°F to 250°F (-40°C to 121°C) •Minimum application temperature: -10°F (-23°C) •Conforms well to smooth and embossed surfaces. Designed for use with white acrylic-embossed Thermax™ insulation/finish boards.

What are the ASTM C1289 classifications for DuPont polyisocyanurate products ?
The ASTM C1289 classifications for DuPontpolyisocyanurate products are as shown below:
ASTM C1289 Types Products
Type I, Class I Tuff-R™ Insulation (< 1')
Type I, Class 2 Tuff-R™ Insulation (≥ 1')
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ Basic NH Insulation
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ Heavy Duty Insulation
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ Light Duty NH Insulation
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ XARMOR™ (ci) Exterior Insulation
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ Metal Building Board NH Insulation
Type I, Class 2 Thermax™ White Finish NH Insulation

Type1 - Faced with aluminum foil on both major surfaces of the core foam. Class 1 - Non-reinforced core foam. Class 2 - Glass fiber reinforced core foam. Dimensional stability will be greater than Class 1 when fastened properly. ASTM C1289 Class 2 exceeds Class 1 requirements.
