Made More Durable with Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer
DuPont™ Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer helps provide enhanced strength, resistance, and traction to tires and other goods.
What is DuPont™ Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer?
DuPont™ Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer is a dispersion of a highly branched para-aramid pulp available in a family of rubber matrices. It is based upon a proprietary technology that opens the structure of the highly branched pulp and allows it to be uniformly dispersed into our customers’ rubber formulations, helping enable efficient reinforcement.
How is Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer Used?
Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer reinforces differently from conventional fillers such as carbon black and silica by increasing stiffness (modulus) with little or no change in hysteresis that can lead to heat buildup (tan delta). Field-use performance in a range of applications has demonstrated improvements in abrasion resistance, tear strength, rubber green strength, modulus, and cut and chip resistance.
Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer is used successfully in:
- Seals and gaskets
- Bicycle tires
- Vibration mounts and isolators
- Roll coverings
- Military applications
- Rubber-coated fabrics
Tires operate in challenging environments. They must provide traction, wear, and handling while simultaneously providing reduced rolling resistance for improved fuel economy. Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer is used to help stiffen tire components critical to cornering and handling. Its ability to reinforce rubber compounds, yet maintain low hysteretic losses, helps provide manufacturers with a route to lower rolling resistance.
Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer has been helping to provide improved performance in power transmission (PT) belts for over 15 years. Benefits in PT belts include lower hysteresis, abrasion resistance, and cut and chip resistance (tooth shear), leading to longer life. The belt manufacturer also can take advantage of improved green strength and lower cost of manufacture due to ease of dispersion. Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer can help provide improved tear resistance and reduced crack growth propagation in applications such as conveyor belts.
Conveyor Belts - Mining Industry
Operational continuity is critical to the productivity of a mine operation, so different technologies and products have been implemented over the years to increase the lifetime of belt materials, decrease belt energy consumption and enhance the ability to predict belt failure. DuPont has been at the forefront of this technological innovation, and DuPont™ Kevlar® fiber is helping to create solutions to form lighter, stronger and longer-lasting belts to address the main concerns and needs of the mining industry.

Kevlar® Engineered Elastomer for tire reinforcement is based on a new method to disperse para-aramid pulp into rubber. Read the study that explains the science behind this innovative pulp that has been adopted with success in the automobile industry.
Best known for its use in ballistic and stab-resistant body armor, Kevlar® brand aramid fiber is credited with helping to save thousands of lives. Lightweight and extraordinarily strong, it’s used to make a variety of clothing, accessories, and equipment safer, more cut resistant and durable.
