Laminates made with Nomex®

Nomex® Is the Critical Element in Laminate Insulation

DuPont works with highly qualified laminators who create high-quality laminate insulation products based on Nomex® paper for use in rotating machines. Nomex® paper is the critical element helping enable these laminates to perform.

Ideally suited for a variety of temperature ranges and applications, laminate insulation products based on Nomex® paper help enhance the performance and reliability of rotating machines.

The superior property retention of Nomex® paper allows the laminate insulation to be produced with a thinner grade of Nomex® paper on the outer layers.  This thinner laminate insulation helps allow for higher slot fill and better heat transfer, both of which increase motor efficiency.

The outstanding thermal stability, excellent mechanical toughness and inherent dielectric strength of Nomex® paper enable laminate insulation products based on Nomex® paper to perform reliably over a long service life.  In fact, the use of Nomex® paper helps ensure that there will be enough electrical isolation remaining to continue performing after the film layer degrades at operating temperature.

Nomex® based laminates can be used as universal insulation products for many applications because they are superior in performance to the original insulation materials.  This helps enable repair manufacturers to standardize on Nomex® based laminate solutions to meet a wide range of performance requirements.

Due to its excellent mechanical toughness, the use of Nomex® paper provides significant advantages in flexible laminate insulation.  The most common types of laminate insulation based on Nomex® paper are NMN, NKN and NM.  Custom laminate solutions can be designed to meet performance requirements of specific applications.

Nomex® Based Laminate Type NMN

Type NMN is a three-ply laminate with polyester film between two layers of Nomex® paper.  Type NMN laminates made with Nomex® papers are used in UL systems typically up to 180°C. These laminates are broadly used in the production and repair of motors, generators of many sizes and temperature classes.  The most important applications for these laminates are slot liners, wedges and phase insulation in Class H motors and generators, as well as in large and specialty Class F motors.

Nomex® Based Laminate Type NKN

Type NKN is a three-ply laminate with polyimide film between two layers of Nomex® paper.  These laminates are typically used in motors and generators that operate in excess of Class H temperature requirements.  There are a number of insulation systems recognized by UL that include these laminates for temperature classes up to and including 220°C.

Nomex® Based Laminate Type NM

Type NM is a two-ply laminate of Nomex® paper and polyester film.  These cost-effective, thin and slick laminates are outstanding alternatives to those that are all polyester-based.  Broadly used in the manufacture of smaller motors, the most important applications for these laminates are slot liners, wedges and phase insulation in Class F motors, as well as in specialty Class B motors. These laminates help improve the manufacturing process by increasing automatic insertion machine speeds.
