Making Car Armoring More Affordable for Families in Brazil

View of Rio de Janeiro at night from a nearby mountain top.
The city of Rio de Janeiro is as alive at night as it is by day.

In many parts of the world, violence remains a daily threat for average citizens. In Brazil, the murder rate can reach 40,000 a year — enough to seriously concern middle-class families. Until recently, providing a family car with car armoring, including bullet-resistant panels and protective window layers, was a largely unrealized safety and protection dream. But not anymore.

Quick Facts

In Brazil, compared to market price car armor, DuPont™ Armura® costs nearly 65% less.

In 2008, DuPont introduced an innovative, retrofit solution to make reliable car armor more affordable in Brazil — at more than 50% lower than market prices (about $12,000). Called DuPont™ Armura®, this solution uses Kevlar® for all panels and SentryGlas® laminate layers with SpallShield® protection for windows and glass. The Kevlar® panels are light, flexible, and molded for a precise fit, making installation fast and reliable. The thin, clear glazing solution in SentryGlas® was first used for hurricane-proofing, as it retains glass shards at the moment of impact. The DuPont™ Armura® armor kit helps provide protection against gunshots specific to .38-gauge firearms or lower, which covers 97% of all firearms in São Paulo, Brazil. And the entire package adds less than 198 pounds to the total vehicle weight — more than 50% less than traditional armoring, which averages 450 pounds.

The DuPont™ Armura® armor kit is initially available in São Paulo, Recife, Fortaleza and Bahia for consumers of the new Mitsubishi Pajero TR4, Hyundai Tucson, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Chevrolet Vectra car models. It's certified by the Brazilian Army, which subjected its armored panels with Kevlar® and SentryGlas® windows to rigorous attack conditions to ensure its efficiency and protective abilities. With decades of experience in the protection industry, DuPont remains innovative and motivated in the fight for personal safety and protection.
