DuPont's R&D investment is focused on delivering value to its customers while extending its leadership across the high-value, science-driven segments of the agriculture and food value chains, strengthening its lead as provider of differentiated, high-value advanced industrial materials, and building transformational new bio-based industrial businesses. Each business in the company undertakes R&D activities to support its objectives. In addition, the company directs investment to incubate new science-intensive growth opportunities additive to the existing business portfolios. The R&D portfolio is managed by senior business and R&D leaders to ensure consistency with the corporate and business strategies and to capitalize on the application of emerging science.

Building on a History of Market-Driven Science and Innovation

DuPont is home to one of the world’s first industrial research and development facilities—the Experimental Station. The 150-acre campus-style Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware, was established to diversify DuPont from explosives into new industries, a process that started by research into cellulose chemistry in 1903. The breakthroughs made by scientists and engineers at the Experimental Station are recognized throughout the world, including nylon—the world’s first synthetic fiber, DuPont™ Kevlar® advanced aramid fibers that have helped save thousands of lives globally, and DuPont™ Tyvek® nonwovens protective material that improves energy efficiency and air quality.

Today, this landmark site is joined by 150 R&D locations in 35 countries. Global research and development is focused on a diverse range of markets including agriculture, automotive, construction, electronics, chemicals, industrial materials, and alternative energy.
