On Earth Day, DuPont Performance Building Solutions & Corian® Design Offers Tips to Retrofit Your Home

Press Release | April 19, 2023

Wilmington, DE., April 19, 2023 — For more than 50 years, Earth Day has been a time to promote care for the planet, demonstrate support for sustainable practices and renew collective commitment to fighting climate change. In celebration of this year’s theme, Invest in Our Planet, DuPont Performance Building Solutions & Corian® Design is offering its top tips to retrofit your home in support of the building and construction industry’s efforts to promote a greener, healthier and more prosperous future. Studies show that by 2050 nearly 80% of homes will have already been built, which makes retrofitting a requirement to meeting our global responsibility in the face of climate change.

While the unfortunate reality is that the world is not on track to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, retrofitting is an effective strategy that will save homeowners money on energy bills while also helping the planet. According to a 2021 study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), comprehensive retrofits can cut a home’s energy use by 58% to 79% and can cut its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 32% to 56%, depending on the home’s age and climate region.

For homeowners this spring, investing in the planet can begin with investments at home: for example, by retrofitting insulation, existing appliances, windows, and infrastructure with energy-efficient upgrades. Improving efficiency reduces GHG emissions and, if done at scale, can help keep global warming in check. Depending on the home, and its location, needs and budget, retrofitting can entail a myriad of upgrades, swap-outs and do-overs from basement to attic and every room in between. Each improvement in insulation and air sealing contributes to a home’s overall reduction in energy use and GHG emissions. Homeowners can also see improvements by adding everything from storm windows in colder climates to ceiling fans in warm places, upgrades to HVAC systems, smart thermostats, or replacing light bulbs with energy-efficient versions.

To address the burden of cost, homeowners can take advantage of some of the many financial support provisions that were passed in Pres. Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This includes numerous tax incentives, rebates, and other financial programs to help individuals and families invest in retrofitting their homes. For example, for homeowners who want to purchase and install energy-efficiency enabling insulation, windows, doors, or make other efficiency improvements, the IRA offers Section 25C tax credits for up to 30% of eligible purchases with a maximum credit of $1,200 for energy efficiency improvements for all qualified expenditures annually, until 2032, and with no lifetime limit. This means homeowners can take advantage of this credit each year. Using this tax incentive to first optimize the building envelope will then enable the efficient use of upgraded HVAC systems and low carbon renewable electricity power sources.

Retrofitting effectively means making sure a home’s insulation and air sealing are fully optimized. Every opening that’s been created in a wall – window, door, vent or roof - has potential for energy loss. Using more effective and climate-friendly insulation and air-sealing products, helps homes use energy more efficiently and is therefore less of a burden on the energy grid. This means that energy-efficient homes save money for homeowners and reduce emissions – mitigating climate impact. Thousands of companies provide materials to the construction industry, many of which are innovating their chemistries to reduce their impact on the climate. At DuPont Performance Building Solutions & Corian® Design, we focus on higher value, longer performing insulation, air sealing, and weatherization materials that not only protect the building envelope, enabling extended performance and healthier living, but also provide positive impact on the planet.

“As we celebrate the 53rd annual edition of Earth Day, we encourage home owners everywhere to join us in investing in our planet,” said Shawn Hunter, Global Sustainability Director for DuPont Performance Building Solutions & Corian® Design. “Earth Day is the perfect time to remind ourselves that we all call the blue marble home, and that our collective home is changing, as result of climate change. We know that there remains a tremendous amount of work to be done to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis, but we also know that we still have the power to choose a future in which today’s and tomorrow’s generations can thrive. Individually, our actions can – and must – add up to drive real impact. However you choose to invest in the planet this Earth Day, we applaud you for your actions!”
