WILMINGTON, Del., Sept. 9, 2024 — DuPont (NYSE:DD) is pleased to share the latest developments in the reformulation journey and evolution of its Styrofoam™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation portfolio. With completion of the conversion to low global warming potential (GWP) formulation, all DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand XPS products no longer carry the “ST-100” name and are now known as Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation across North America. “ST-100” was used in the product name throughout the transition phase to the new formulation and is no longer needed. As of today, low-GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS now features DuPont's recognizable blue branding on light grey boards for easy identification.

Reduced embodied carbon profile, same exceptional long-term performance

For more than 80 years, Styrofoam™ Brand XPS has been recognized as an innovative, sustainable building product – creating an entire, original insulation material category. Low-GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation builds upon this legacy of continuous technical innovation, delivering a 94% reduction in embodied carbon, while still providing the same operational carbon savings through stable, long-term insulation value across wide use temperatures. Throughout the reformulation and manufacturing plant conversion process, completed in late 2023, the unique closed-cell structure and rigid foam technology that has enabled Styrofoam™ Brand XPS to meet and exceed standards for thermal, moisture, air and vapor performance has remained unchanged, but the product’s nomenclature and color have evolved.

2024 Heroes of Chemistry Winner: third award for game-changing technology

DuPont has also been honored with a 2024 American Chemical Society (ACS) Heroes of Chemistry award for the low-GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS formulation. One of the ACS’s highest honors in the industry, the Heroes of Chemistry award recognizes companies and researchers who work toward the betterment of humankind by developing products that have led to significant advancements in improving health and the environment.

This marks the third award for sustainable innovation the team and new formulation have earned. They were also recognized with a 2023 American Chemistry Council Sustainability Leadership Award in the Environmental Protection category. Styrofoam™ Brand Plazamate™ XR insulation, which features the low-GWP formulation and offers the highest thermal resistance per inch of any XPS roofing insulation, received a 2023 R&D 100 Award.
