As healthcare needs continue to change, the demand for smart, wearable monitoring devices has grown. However, device manufacturers face several challenges with the current generation of skin patches, which often are regarded as being difficult to use, being uncomfortable, having low functionality, exhibiting poor signal quality over time and having short wear times. DuPont has been working – and continues to work – to help device manufacturers address those concerns.

DuPont™ Liveo™ Healthcare Solutions has developed an ecosystem in which the company collaborates with key partners, such as STMicroelctronics, to leverage healthcare and electronics expertise, leading to innovative solutions and fast prototyping for cutting-edge medical devices. This emphasis on partnership has led to medical patch concepts for monitoring, diagnostics and treatment.

Partnership equals results

The DuPont™ Liveo™ Smart Biosensing Patch prototype that resulted from DuPont’s aforementioned collaboration with STMicroelectronics offers more comfortable, easier-to-use patch designs that are easy to scale and customize. It integrates electronics and sensor technology with expertise in high-performance medical wearable skin adhesive technology for continuous, longer-lasting, more reliable remote health diagnostics and monitoring data generation over time. This wearable health technology platform is intended to serve as a reference design/prototype upon which a final product can be developed.

Advanced monitoring capabilities

The DuPont™ Liveo™ Smart Biosensing Patch prototype measures and synchronizes multiple vital signs:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) for electrical cardiac activity
  • Seismocardiogram (SCG) for mechanical cardiac activity
  • Gyrocardiogram (GCG) for rotational cardiac motion

This combination enables comprehensive cardiac analysis including valve activities, timing intervals, and respiratory patterns - all from a single wearable device.

Technology integration highlights

The prototype combines several key technologies:

  • Liveo™ Soft Skin Conductive Tape for reliable signal transmission
  • MEMS-based sensors for precise mechanical measurements
  • Ultra-low power management systems for extended wear time
  • On-edge AI for data processing
