DuPont and CAS Host Successful Webinar on the Advancements and Challenges of AR/VR Technologies

DuPont Display Technologies hosted a webinar with Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, to discuss AR/VR technologies in July 2023. DuPont explained the advancements in these technologies and the current challenges, while CAS demonstrated how to access necessary solutions using a statistical method.

DuPont speaker Hosuk Song, Global Marketing Manager for Advanced Display Materials in Display Technologies, E&I, began by explaining the evolution of AR/VR technologies, current trends, and future needs. AR/VR technologies faced many challenges in the market, but technological advancements have solved many problems and increased marketability. Nevertheless, there persist certain technical hurdles that require solutions, while the elevated cost continues to act as a limiting factor. The speaker delved into the technological constraints within the realm of AR/VR and highlighted the defining attributes of the envisioned future technologies. In particular, VR technology requires the development of optical design and optical materials for more natural screen composition. To meet these requirements, two methods must be implemented for light diffraction and the creation of diffraction and holographic effects. He explained the required characteristics and improved effects of new VR optical materials that will satisfy these requirements, as well as the benefits from the application of these technologies.

CAS researcher Sona Lee explained the development status of optical materials that are most in need of improvement in AR/VR technologies based on data. The researcher examined and categorized prior literature such as papers and patents with key words from current discussions, and based on this, she statistically presented the materials and compositions that are being studied for optical design. In the same way, the researcher showed the statistical study results of the existing research on material candidates and compositions to create diffraction and holographic effects together.

This event provided participants with valuable insights into candidate materials that meet the necessary criteria. This knowledge will empower them to conduct more comprehensive research tailored to the preferences of their respective research institutions and companies in the future.

The webinar drew 19 experts from the Asia-Pacific region specializing in AR/VR technology, resulting in a dynamic and engaging discussion. Should these participants make advancements in the technology, this event will be seen as a starting point for potential future joint development.
