DuPont™ AmberLite™ HPR resin provides slick solution for oil refinery

The Aspropyrgos oil refinery complex in West Attica, Greece, which has a nominal capacity of about 285,000 barrels per day, was due to undergo maintenance on its onsite water production system which was constructed in 1980.

The work, which was to include an ion exchange resin replacement, had the joint goals of improving water supply reliability and optimizing costs while also avoiding significant investment in new equipment.

Together with a local supply partner, DuPont Water Solutions found an optimal solution in its new AmberLite™ HPR resin technology. With the new system, throughput was increased from 60m3/h to 70 m3/h. However, with a modest investment in a larger feed pump, it is estimated that the hydraulic capabilities of the system could potentially be stretched up to 120 m3/h production rates.

Overall, AmberLite™ HPR has helped the Apropyrgos water treatment system to operate at a much higher standard of chemical efficiency and use scarce freshwater responsibly by increasing water recovery by more than 50 percent. The increased capacity and flow rate have meant that the site’s supply reliability has been improved without a major capital investment.

Find out more about how AmberLite™ HPR technology is transforming operations at the Aspropyrgos oil refinery system, where downtime has also been reduced, operating costs cut, and the quality of the demineralized water improved.
