Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and Resource Recovery for Coal Chemical Wastewater Treatment

CHN Energy Ningxia Coal Group - the industry leader in clean coal technology in China - needed to achieve zero liquid discharge (ZLD) for its coal chemical wastewater treatment facility at the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base in Ningxia, China.

The highly polluted wastewater has high salt content, high hardness, high suspended solids and high organic pollutants, hence ZLD is necessary to comply with the strict local wastewater discharge regulations.

DuPont membrane technology was used to construct a minimum liquid discharge (MLD) solution to process the wastewater and achieve significant water recovery before thermal processing to achieve ZLD.

The compact and efficient system uses DuPont™ IntegraFlux™ ultrafiltration* elements for pretreatment, FilmTec™ Fortilife™ nanofiltration elements for salt separation and FilmTec™ Fortilife™ reverse osmosis elements for multi-stage salt concentration. Precision membrane manufacturing has allowed the system to maintain stable performance and it offers high tolerance to membrane fouling, reducing cleaning requirements.

Read the full case study to discover how DuPont membrane technology can be used for MLD, recovering up to 95 percent of wastewater, and significantly lowering the cost of subsequent ZLD thermal processing, by up to 60 percent.
