Advancing Wastewater Treatment in Sweden with MemCor™ MBR Systems

A state-of-the-art municipal wastewater facility in Kristianstad, Sweden sets a new benchmark for treatment performance, efficiency, and future-ready design with a MemCor™ MBR system

As population growth and increasing industrial wastewater flows placed greater demands on local infrastructure, the Municipality of Kristianstad, Sweden sought a long-term solution capable of delivering higher-quality effluent while meeting stringent discharge requirements for the Baltic Sea. To address these challenges, the new Centrala ReningsVerket (CRV) wastewater treatment plant partnered with Nordic Construction Company (NCC) to implement advanced membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology and create a future-ready wastewater treatment facility.

The project features the country's first DuPont™ MemCor™ MBR system utilizing MemPulse™ MBR modules, combining activated sludge treatment with membrane filtration in a fully automated process. Designed to enhance treatment performance while reducing life-cycle costs compared to conventional approaches, the system provides exceptional effluent quality and supports the municipality's goals for sustainable wastewater management. With a treatment capacity of 48 ML/d (12.68 MGD), the facility is equipped to meet both current and future wastewater treatment needs.

Located on unstable ground near the lowest point in Sweden, the CRV site presented unique construction challenges. The compact footprint of the MemCor™ MBR system helped minimize the costs associated with land stabilization while delivering robust and reliable treatment performance. The plant's modular and adaptable design also provides flexibility for future expansion and evolving regulatory requirements, making it a valuable long-term asset for the community.
