Suez, Egypt – June 10, 2019 – Facing absolute water scarcity, Egypt records approximately one inch of total rainfall each year. As the country’s population expands, the demand for safe drinking water only continues to grow. DuPont Water Solutions, a part of the DuPont Safety & Construction business, partnered with Integrated Environmental Technology and Oil Services Company S.A.E (IETOS) to design a decentralized ultrafiltration (UF) treatment plant in the Suez Governate. The plant is the first of four containerized UF water treatment plants planned in the region.

“Decentralized water treatment is a long-term solution for communities – like those in Suez – who are in need of access to clean water without incurring additional large capital costs and operational expenses,” said Alexander Lane, Commercial Director EMEA at DuPont Water Solutions. “Working alongside IETOS, we customized a water treatment system using highly flexible UF module design to create a plant that could be put together in a fraction of the time, and up-scaled to meet demand.”

The Suez Governorate is one of the most urbanized regions in the country, putting increased pressure on limited freshwater resources. With the aim of producing reliable, high-quality drinking water for over 240,000 local residents across four towns, the Governorate was challenged by deteriorating water quality in their existing system. This resulted in an urgent need to design a new water treatment system with the flexibility to meet evolving water needs in a cost-effective way.

Built from pre-engineered and pre-assembled IntegraPac™ Ultrafiltration units, the new compact plant is one-third the size of the previous facility. The modular design of the system requires fewer parts and materials than traditional designs and allows for a simplified installation process. In turn, the facility was fully operational in just three months – compared to the twelve months typically needed for completion.

Efficiency is another a key factor in the system – to deliver safe, high-quality drinking water without the heavy addition of treatment chemicals. IntegraPac UF technology excels in water treatment space with a reduced footprint and innovative XP fibers that help boost productivity.

The facility now has the flexibility needed to address future supply fluctuations to meet rising water demand. This is accomplished by adding additional modules to the bays, which have been designed to allow for such extensions.

“Thanks to containerized design and UF technology, the treatment facility can easily be expanded by up to 30 percent without further mechanical or electrical work. And, if needed, the modular UF skids can be moved to another location. This is a game-changer for us,” said Hazem Gaber, CEO IETOS.

“As an innovator in the market, we realize that the biggest impacts we can make is to enhance efficiency, and fine-tune and integrate technologies to meet unique system and water quality needs,” said HP Nanda, Global Vice President and General Manager at DuPont Water Solutions. “Through collaboration with value-chain partners, like IETOS, we can implement solutions that improve access to drinking water, transform quality of health and life, and support greater economic growth.”
