Larsen & Toubro- Tecton JV Installed FilmTec™ Reverse Osmosis Membranes with Inge® Ultrafiltration Technology in 100 MLD Plant in Gujarat

MUMBAI, India, January 2, 2023 – DuPont today announced that its FilmTec™ membranes and Inge® ultrafiltration membranes were installed in a multi-tech seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant for industrial use built by Larsen & Toubro -Tecton JV at Dahej for the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in India.

The plant, which recently became operational, provides 100 Million Liters/Day (MLD) of water exclusively to the Petroleum, Chemicals & Petrochemicals Investment Regions (PCPIR) industries in the Dahej district—meeting approximately a quarter of the local industrial water demand.

These industries are highly dependent on fresh water and have faced major production issues due to water scarcity during the summer season, as well as rising salinity of the Narmada River. More than 190 businesses in the PCPIR sector will benefit from the water security provided by this plant.

In 2019, Larsen & Toubro- Tecton JV was awarded the EPC contract to build a 100 MLD desalination plant for GIDC.

The JV chose DuPont Water Solutions (DWS) to supply membranes for this project—with a  multi-technology approach to desalination that leverages a combination of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and ultrafiltration (UF) modules. The durability, rejection, energy efficiency, and extremely long lifespans of the FilmTec™ membranes—in combination with ultrafiltration modules—are contributing to the performance and sustainability of the plant.

In addition to providing more than 2,000 Inge® UF modules, DuPont also supplied more than 10,000 FilmTec™ Seawater and Brackish water RO membranes—with approximately 75 percent being delivered as dry membranes.

The dry SWRO membranes, offered by DuPont, provided project managers more flexibility and ease of installation. As dry membranes do not require preservation solution, they enable longer storage times, lower labor costs, and easier, long-term warehouse planning. The dry membranes are also more sustainable, using less water and chemicals in production and significantly reducing the carbon footprint of shipping.

“This project is a model for how desalination can provide a sustainable water supply for collective industrial purposes,” said Chrys Fernandes, who leads DuPont’s water solutions in India.  “Larsen & Toubro- Tecton JV chose DWS for our focus on innovation, excellence, and high-quality standards. We are confident this project will encourage other industrial zones to commission such plants to meet their water demands in the face of water scarcity and quality challenges.”

DuPont Water Solutions’ technologies help purify more than 50 million gallons of water every minute around the world, enable water reuse and recycling, desalination, and the safe access of both ground and surface water. Water Solutions offers solutions to a variety of water and sustainability challenges through a broad portfolio of water purification and separation technologies including reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, ion exchange resins (IEX), ultrafiltration (UF), electrodeionization (EDI), nanofiltration (NF), membrane bioreactor systems (MBR), membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABR), membrane degasification, and closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) systems.
