Florida’s largest Membrane Bioreactor plant celebrates expansion with DuPont™ MemPulse™ modules
WILMINGTON, Del., December 9, 2025 — The Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Advanced Wastewater Treatment plant in Sarasota, Florida, marked a milestone expansion this week—with 50 percent more capacity to treat and reclaim wastewater. Plant operators and local government officials celebrated the plant expansion with a ribbon cutting on Friday, December 5.
Utilizing MemPulse™ Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) modules, this expansion makes the Bee Ridge plant the largest MBR installation in the state of Florida while achieving advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) standards. Originally designed to produce 12 million gallons per day of reclaimed water, the newly expanded Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility increased its capacity to 18 million gallons per day to meet the increasing demand for water and wastewater treatment due to population growth in southwest Florida.
The expansion and AWT conversion project were completed in coordination between Sarasota County, Carollo Engineers, and Garney Construction, Inc.
MemPulse™ MBR modules combine biological nutrient removal with advanced membrane filtration to produce high-quality effluent that meets the AWT standards. At the Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Advanced Wastewater Treatment plant, a total of 3,696 MemPulse™ MBR modules will help reduce the concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in discharge to safeguard Sarasota’s waterways and the Gulf of Mexico.
The high-quality effluent will also allow for non-potable reuse for agricultural irrigation while setting the stage for further water reuse applications in the future, conserving the community’s sources of potable water for drinking water purposes.
The Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility demonstrates how advanced wastewater treatment technologies can meet the growing needs of communities while protecting valuable water resources for future generations,” said Karla Butler, Vice President and General Manager at DuPont Water Solutions. “By leveraging MemPulse™ MBR modules, the facility will be able to meet the increased demand for wastewater treatment and non-potable reuse while helping Sarasota County to protect the local watershed and comply with the latest regulatory standards.”
For over 30 years, MemPulse™ MBR technology has established a reputation for high efficiency, reliability, and reduced operational costs, and it is now used in more than 300 municipal and industrial installations worldwide.
