Providing Better Management of Organic and Nutrient Removal with OxyMem™ Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor Modules

Increasing Capacity without Expanding Footprint in Elmira, Ontario, Canada with Oxymem™ MABR Modules

The Region of Waterloo, located in southwestern Ontario, Canada, is one of the fastest growing regions in the province. Faced with increasing and variable loads from its growing population and industrial activity, along with limited space on site, the Elmira Wastewater Treatment Plant needed a smarter way to boost biological treatment capacity without expanding its footprint.

In collaboration with DuPont, Aquafy Water Technologies, Inc., Jacobs and H2Ontario, Elmira installed OxyMem™ membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) modules—the largest OxyMem™ deployment in Canada—directly into existing tanks. These pre-assembled modules were lowered into live tanks with minimal disruption, allowing the plant to stay online during installation.

Read the case study to learn how OxyMem™ MABR modules delivered efficient oxygen transfer while enabling simultaneous nitrification and denitrification— improving nitrogen removal while reducing energy demand.
